EU Ministers agree on a stronger reaction to Russian invasion of Ukraine
The focus of the Informal Meeting of Ministers for Foreign Affairs (Gymnich) held on 29-30 August in Milan attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius was on Russia’s mounting aggression against Ukraine.
The Ministers stated that the situation in Eastern Ukraine is Russian invasion of Ukraine, that shall be condemned by the strongest words, violates international law, is unacceptable to the international community, and must be ended.
“Russia is carrying on the cynical policy of universal denial and, irrespective of the diplomatic efforts, is sending its troops to Ukraine. An open attack against the Ukrainians has been launched, which must be stopped by our common efforts”, emphasized L.Linkevičius.
The Minister noted that the international community had to resolutely evaluate and react to such Russia’s acts, help the Ukrainians by providing necessary humanitarian, financial assistance and support for the Army. Also, it is necessary to strengthen pressure and countermeasures with respect to Russia aimed to achieve that Russia should cease its military operations with respect to Ukraine and withdraw its troops, fighters and armament from the territory of Ukraine and the border region.
"We cannot waste time on discussions about the terminology of invasion; we must jointly work to get ready for the possible uncertainties in the future. Russia demonstrates disrespect not only for Ukraine but also for us. Unfortunately, we do not always show solidarity, even after the agreed common position of imposing sanctions, or by making illogical military deals”, noted the Lithuanian Foreign Minister.
