On March 17 in Brussels a session of the European Convention started, which deliberates articles of the future Constitutional Treaty defining the types of legal acts of the European Union.
During the two-day session, Undersecretary of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rytis Martikonis represents the Lithuanian Government, MPs Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis, Algirdas Gricius and Gintautas Šivickas represent the Lithuanian Seimas (Parliament).
A new type of legal acts has been proposed to introduce at the Convention, i.e. delegated acts. This would allow authorising the European Commission to take decisions concerning technical details, yet the Council of the European Union and the Parliament of the EU would retain supervisory control over these decisions. „We stick to the principle that upon introducing this novelty the European Commission should receive sufficient powers, since it is this institution that ensures the interest of all member states,“ Representative of the Lithuanian Government Undersecretary Martikonis stated.
