EU COMMISSIONER FOR ENLARGEMENT TO VISIT LITHUANIA

On 1-2 September, European Union (EU) Commissioner for Enlargement Günter Verheugen will visit Lithuania. In Vilnius, the guest will meet Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, Parliament Speaker Artūras Paulauskas and Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas. He will also attend a meeting with Cardinal Audrys Juozas Bačkis in the Curia of Vilnius Archdiocese. Günter Verheugen is also scheduled to meet Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis. At the meeting, the Minister will congratulate Günter Verheugen on the appointment to the new European Commission, presided by José Manuelis Durão Barroso, where Verheugen will occupy the post of Vice President and Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, also responsible for implementation of the Lisbon strategy. The Minister and the EU Commissioner will discuss the most important issues of the European policy, such as further EU enlargement and EU relations with the neighbouring countries Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. On 2 August, Günter Verheugen will be granted the title of Honorary Doctor of the Law University of Lithuania. The EU Commissioner will sign in the University’s book of honour and meet members of the Lithuanian Rectors Conference. Günter Verheugen has been responsible for enlargement of the EU since 1999. Lithuania started EU accession negotiations in 2000 and completed it successfully on 13 December 2002.
