EU-Armenia cooperation shall be continued, says Lithuanian Foreign Minister L.Linkevičius

During the meeting with President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandyan in Yerevan on 24 October, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius said that Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union should not be an obstacle to continue its constructive cooperation with the European Union.

“The EU should continue and strengthen cooperation with Armenia in all spheres that are in line with the foreign policy chosen by the country”, the Lithuanian  Minister said.

L.Linkevičius noted that Armenia should decide itself in what fields the EU could assist Armenia to continue carrying out the reforms. In the conversations, it was stressed that Armenia’s relations with the EU gave a strong impetus to the country’s internal reforms and that Lithuania was ready to join the new form of dialogue and cooperation between Armenia and the EU.

The head of Lithuania’s diplomacy expressed satisfaction with the increasing volumes of bilateral trade and noted that there were plenty of opportunities to further strengthen economic ties.

L.Linkevičius expressed his satisfaction that the first Lithuania-Armenia business forums would be held in Vilnius and Yerevan soon. It was agreed to complete all procedures for setting up the Intergovernmental Commission on Bilateral Economic Cooperation as soon as possible. The Lithuanian Minister underlined that the Commission would serve as a platform for regular meetings of representatives of institutions and businesses of both countries. L.Linkevičius noted the high quality and potential of Lithuanian companies in the food industry, healthcare services and information technology companies. He highlighted Lithuania’s readiness to advance bilateral cooperation in implementing the EU Twinning projects.
