ENHANCING COOPERATION WITH ICELAND
On 28 February State Secretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Algimantas Rimkūnas with the Permanent Secretary of State of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland Grétar Már Sigurðsson discussed the development of bilateral Lithuanian-Icelandic political and economic relations in Reykjavik.
During the meeting the diplomats also shared opinions on relevant issues of security policy, cooperation in the United Nations and other international organizations.
Diplomats from Lithuania and Iceland paid special attention to the discussion of issues of effective organization of diplomatic activities, personnel management, administration and financial management.
The Republic of Iceland became the first country to recognize the restoration of Lithuanian Independence. The population of Iceland is slightly more than 300 000, but the country has a well developed diplomatic service network. Interests of Iceland in the world, especially business interests are defended by embassies, diplomatic missions accredited to international organizations and consulates headed by career diplomats or honorary consuls.
There are two Lithuanian consulates headed by honorary consuls in Iceland.
