ENHANCING BILATERAL COOPERATION BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND SWITZERLAND

On 13 April Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas together with the visiting President of Switzerland and Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs Micheline Calmy-Rey discussed issues of bilateral relations and perspectives for economic cooperation.

The officials  also discussed important issues of the European Union, energy security, international politics  and the EU Neighbourhood Policy. The President presented the projects that are being implemented by Switzerland in Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova and the North Caucasus.

Minister P.Vaitiekūnas thanked the President for the practical and financial support of Switzerland.

During a referendum on 26 November 2006 the Swiss approved the decision of the Federal Council to allocate a billion of Swiss francs to the new Member States of the European Union. Lithuania was assigned about 156 million litas. Minister P.Vaitekūnas noted that Lithuania would seek the most efficient ways of application of the funds, allocating the finances to certain projects in the areas of health care, social services and scientific research.

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the President of Switzerland agreed that all the possibilities had to be availed of the Lithuanian-Swiss cooperation in the areas of economy, education, culture and science.

During the official visit in Vilnius M.Calmy-Rey met with President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Viktoras Muntianas and acting Minister of Finance Zigmantas Balčytis.
