ENERGY SECURITY ISSUES WERE DISCUSSED IN GERMANY

On 12 February, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Ušackas completed his official visit to Germany meeting with Federal Minister of Interior of  Germany Wolfgang Schäuble, Foreign Policy and Security Advisor to the German Chancellor Christoph Heusgen, Germany’s Parliamentary Secretary of State at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology Peter Hinze, leader of the liberal party Free Democratic Party of Germany Guido Westerwelle and members of the Christian Democratic Union within the Bundestag of Germany.

Among the issues that were discussed during the meetings was the project of North European gas pipeline Nord Stream.

Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs V.Ušackas noted that for Lithuania this project raised concern regarding the environmental and energy security issues, as well as pertaining to how solutions were being made.

“This project does not solve our energy security problems, increases Lithuania’s vulnerability within the power grid and raises a lot of environmental problems, while the decision regarding the project was made without consulting with all the interested countries,” indicated V.Ušackas.

Seeking to enhance mutual understanding on energy issues, the Minister suggested organising a conference, dedicated to energy issues this year in Lithuania.
