ENERGY SECURITY IS AMONG THE MOST IMPORTANT PRIORITIES FOR LITHUANIA AND HUNGARY

On 13-14 January at the informal European Union’s General Affairs Council in Budapest during which Hungary presented its priorities, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Egidijus Meilūnas noted that Lithuania would pay special attention to energy security.

Lithuania attaches great importance to the European Council summit on energy and innovation issues, which will be held in February.

“We expect that ambitious decisions will be made during the summit in February. Special attention should be given to the issues of lacking energy infrastructure. It is necessary to look for possibilities to increase the EU funding in this area. Another common interest in all European Union is to ensure that the EU’s external partners would comply with international security standards in developing nuclear energy,” Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister said.

Key issues on the EU’s short term agenda were also discussed at the meeting.

Vice-Minister E.Meilūnas stressed that Lithuania would focus on the issues of EU’s economic policy coordination and planned discussions about the future of the EU’s common policies. The review of the European Neighbourhood Policy and further enlargement of the European Union are also among Lithuania’s key priorities.

Hungary will hold the Presidency of the European Union until June.
