On 21 January, Lithuanian expert Dr Dalia Leinartė was elected to the United Nations Human Rights Committee in elections held in New York. As a joint candidate of the Baltic states, Dr. Leinartė beat competitors from six countries and will serve on the Human Rights Committee from 2025 to 2026.
When congratulating Dr Leinartė on winning the elections, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys, underlined that it is an important achievement for Lithuania and a significant contribution of our country to the strengthening of the UN human rights policy.
From 2013 to 2024, Leinartė was a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). In 2017, she became the second Eastern European expert to be elected to the position of Chairperson of the Committee.
The UN Human Rights Committee (HRC) is a body of 18 independent experts that monitors the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by its state parties and makes recommendations to them. The HRC members are elected by secret ballot by the 174 countries that have ratified the Pact, taking into account the experience of the candidates, the criteria for geographical balance, and gender equality.
