DISCUSSION ON CLIMATE CHANGE WAS ORGANIZED AT ECOSOC ON LITHUANIA’S INITIATIVE

On 5 July in Geneva during the substantive session of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) a discussion on climate change was organized on Lithuania’s initiative.

The event was chaired by President of ECOSOC, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations Ambassador Dalius Čekuolis.

Among the participants of the event there were: the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, President of the General Assembly Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, Chairman of the official Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Rajendra Pachauri, President of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development Björn Stigson, representatives from the European Union, the USA, India, Brazil, Mexico and other countries.

During the meeting participants indicated that the issue of climate change was becoming especially important, because the duty of all humankind was to preserve the Earth for future generations. The potential measures the international community, i.e. governments and business representatives, could take to curb the climate change were discussed.

ECOSOC can make a major contribution to devoting more attention to environment protection in developing countries and correlating the development of the countries with wider utilization of renewable energy resources.

The substantive session is one of the major ECOSOC meetings, during which the members of the Council solve global economic and social issues. During this ECOSOC session the Development Cooperation Forum was established. After 2005 World Summit, the Council held the Annual Ministerial Review for the first time this year.

The Annual Ministerial Review is focusing on “Strengthening efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger, including through the global partnership for Development”. In the Review the progress of the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals that were set forth in 2000 is being assessed. During the Review for the first time the voluntary national presentations were made by such developing countries: Bangladesh, Barbados, Ethiopia, Ghana, Cambodia and the Republic of Cape Verde.
