DIALOGUE BETWEEN PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND RELIGIONS PROMOTES MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND TOLERANCE, SAYS LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER
At the Fourth United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Forum in Doha on 11-13 December, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė encouraged the world community to focus on the promotion of tolerance and peaceful cohabitation among peoples.
A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė stressed that the Alliance of Civilizations was a platform for the dialogue between people of different backgrounds and countries, which aimed to address political tensions, solve conflicts and promote peace around the world.“The dialogue between people of different backgrounds and religious traditions is the key to mutual understanding between the West and the Islamic world,” said the Vice-Minister.
The Vice-Minister said that Lithuania’s Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2011 supported democratic processes in North Africa and in the Middle East.
According to the Vice-Minister, the strengthening of gender equality and the enhancement of the situation of women in society should be an integral part of these processes.
At the Forum, A.Skaisgirytė Liauškienė met with representatives from more than 20 countries. They discussed bilateral relations and the role of Lithuania in the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations.
Lithuania has participated in the activities of the Alliance of Civilizations since 2006. Currently, the Alliance of Civilizations Forum under the auspices of the United Nations joins together 106 countries and 13 international organizations.
