DEPUTY MINISTER TOURS SOUTHERN EUROPE FOR NATO CONSULTATIONS

On February 14-15, Deputy foreign minister Giedrius Čekuolis is visiting Italy and Greece. He leads the Lithuanian delegation participating in a trip to the Southern European NATO capitals by high representatives of the foreign and defence ministries of the three Baltic countries. The round tour started on Wednesday in Madrid, where the Lithuanian team was led by Rytis Paulauskas, Director of the MFA Multilateral Relations Department. The aim of the tour is to present to the Spanish, Italian and Greek authorities the preparations of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia for NATO accession, primarily in the framework of the Membership Action Plan. The Southern European NATO nations are expected to support the Baltic states' membership aspirations at the NATO Summit in Prague scheduled in November 2002. "Each vote is important for us ahead of the Prague Summit," Deputy Minister Čekuolis said.
