Deputy Foreign Minister participated in events to mark the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the Kaunas Ghetto
On 22 September Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Mantvydas Bekešius took part in the events to mark the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the Kaunas Ghetto at the Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum.
“It’s a period of darkness and tragedy for Lithuania and the whole of Europe, but we have to tell about it for future generations, so that it never happens again,” says M.Bekešius.
Flowers were laid at the memorial site at the Ninth Fort in Kaunas to honour the memory of the victims and the film “Facing Death with Courage” („Narsa akistatoje su mirtimi“) by Yaarit Glezer was screened during the event.
During the Nazi occupation (1941-1944), the Ninth Fort became a place of mass murders. More than 50,000 people of different nationalities were killed there, including more than 30,000 Jews from Kaunas and about 10,000 Jews from other European countries.
