DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER GIEDRIUS ČEKUOLIS MEETS US DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE IAN BRZEZINSKI

On 9 April, Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Giedrius Čekuolis met with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Ian Brzezinski. “Your country is already acting as de facto NATO member” the guest noted and thanked Lithuania for its sincere support to the United States in the fight against terrorism. During the meeting, the main attention was paid to the Alliance’s enlargement after the Prague Summit. Ian Brzezinski affirmed the position of US Government to enlarge NATO and encouraged Lithuania not to stop on its way but to actively work towards strengthening its potential. According to the guest, Lithuania, having started from scratch, achieved impressive results in developing its armed forces. Ian Brzezinski praised Lithuania’s reform of defence capabilities and was of the opinion that Lithuanian-American co-operation after the Prague Summit will gain even greater momentum. The officials exchanged opinions on the future of the Vilnius Process. Giedrius Čekuolis informed that Lithuania plans a meeting of the Vilnius Ten countries in of Vilnius after the Prague Summit. According to the Deputy Minister, Lithuania is determined to continue co-operation with all the candidates.
