CROATIA WANTS TO LEARN FROM LITHUANIA’S EXPERIENCE IN EU ACCESSION NEGOTIATIONS

On 14 October in Zagreb (Croatia) Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis met with his Croatian counterpart Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and discussed the matters of bilateral cooperation and Croatia’s EU accession negotiations.

Antanas Valionis congratulated Croatian Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration on the start of EU accession negotiations and she thanked Lithuanian Minister for supporting Croatia.

Minister Grabar-Kitarovic underlined Croatia’s intention to cooperate closer with Lithuania in order to learn from Lithuania’s negotiations experience. Croatia plans to encourage regional cooperation by initiating the foreign and defence ministers’ meetings of three Baltic States and the countries of the region. Croatia considers particularly important the discussion of defence system reforms and financing issues.

According to Lithuanian Foreign Minister it is important to inform the society about the course of negotiations and ensure the support of the society. Also close cooperation between Government and Parliament is essential.

Antanas Valionis stressed that Croatia should aim at quick and intensive negotiations. Lithuania’s accession negotiations lasted three years and Croatia should take this into account.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister invited Minister Grabar-Kitarovic to visit Lithuania and see the changes after Lithuania’s accession to the European Union.
