COOPERATION BETWEEN POLAND AND LITHUANIA WAS DISCUSSED IN WARSAW

On 12-13 May, delegation led by Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Egidijus Meilūnas visited Warsaw and discussed various issues related to bilateral cooperation with Polish officials.

In Warsaw, the Vice-Minister met with Chairman of the Group for Parliamentary Relations with the Republic of Lithuania of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland Tadeusz Aziewicz, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Grażyna Bernatowicz, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Economy Marcin Korolec, Executive Director of the Permanent Secretariat of the Community of Democracies Bronisław Misztal and representatives from the Lithuanian community of Poland.

At the meetings, officials put special emphasis on energy cooperation, discussed nuclear energy projects that are being implemented in the neighbourhood of Lithuania and Poland. They agreed to make joint effort to work towards the compliance with international standards of the following projects.

The officials also discussed Poland’s priorities, as the country’s presidency of the EU is approaching, issues related to ethnic minorities in both countries and high-level democracy meetings that will take place from June 29 to July 1 in Vilnius.

During the press conference at the Embassy of Lithuania in Warsaw, Vice-Minister E.Meilūnas noted that the ruling of the European Union Court of Justice in the case of Runiewicz-Wardyn clarified spelling of personal names. The ruling of the court testifies to the fact that Lithuania complies with European standards of national minority rights.

Prior to that, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Council of Europe had also given the same assessment of Lithuanian government’s policy towards ethnic minorities.

Vice-Minister E.Meilūnas underlined that the Lithuanian-Polish discussion on ethnic minorities often encountered problems due to reliance on inaccurate information. The Vice-Minister noted that an open and honest dialogue made it possible to achieve significantly more when addressing issues related to ethnic minorities.

The upcoming European Men’s Basketball Championship in Lithuania was also presented at the press conference.
