COOPERATION BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND VIETNAM WAS DISCUSSED IN VILNIUS
On 29 July in Vilnius Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė met with Director-General of the European Department of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Ngoc Binh and discussed bilateral economic relations between Lithuania and Vietnam, cooperation of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) transport ministers.
At the meeting possibility to commemorate the 20th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations was also considered. Lithuania and Vietnam established diplomatic relations on 18 March, 1992.A. Skaisgirytė Liauškienė and Nguyen Ngoc Binh discussed the untapped potential of relations between countries and economic cooperation, exchanged opinions on how it can be increased.
In 2010 Lithuania's exports to Vietnam amounted to LTL 36,05 million (about EUR 10,44 million) and comparing with 2009 increased by 88%. Vietnam was ranked 53 in Lithuania's export partners list. In 2010 Lithuania's imports from Vietnam amounted to LTL 42,45 million(about EUR 12,3 million). Compared with 2009, imports from Vietnam fell by 37,8 %. Bilateral trade balance was negative and amounted to LTL 6,4 million (about EUR 1,8 million).
Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs also proposed Vietnam to hold the fourth ASEM Transport Ministers' meeting. The third ASEM meeting will be held in Europe.
Lithuania, as a transit country, initiated the first ASEM Transport Ministers' meeting, which took place in Vilnius on 19-20 October, 2009. The second ASEM Transport Ministers' Meeting will be held on 24-26 October in China's Sichuan Province Chengdu City.
ASEM is a process of dialogue bringing together all the member states of the European Union and 20 countries in Asia and Oceania. At the initiative of participating countries, specific projects of cooperation between Europe and Asia in political, economic and socio-cultural fields are implemented. Lithuania became a member of ASEM in 2004
On July 29 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the first consultations of Lithuanian and Vietnamese Foreign Ministries. A Memorandum of understanding for the creation of bilateral consultation mechanism was signed in capital of Vietnam Hanoi in May, 2009.
