COOPERATION BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND THE FLEMISH REGION OF BELGIUM IS BEING STRENGTHENED

On 29 June in Brussels, Director of the European Union Department of Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vidmantas Purlys signed cooperation programme between Lithuania and the Flemish region of Belgium in 2009-2012. This programme will help small and medium businesses to cooperate more closely in trade, education, innovations and other areas – exchange of students and researchers will be carried out, bilateral business relations are being established and developed, expert knowledge in transport, agriculture, health care, culture and other areas is being exchanged.

The cooperation programme foresees the Flanders programme with Central and Eastern Europe, which allows for Lithuania to use the financial support that is allotted to the projects aiming at raising the standard of living in the Central and Eastern European countries and establishing long term cooperation ties.

The scope of the cooperation programme encompasses economy, tourism, foreign trade, agriculture, environment and energy, health care, education, youth, sports and other areas.

Representative of Flanders, Secretary-General of the Flemish Department of Foreign Affairs Koen Verlaeckt signed the programme.

Since 1996 the cooperation programme has been renewed every 2-3 years. The programme is implemented by 9 Lithuanian Ministries and other governmental institutions.

The cooperation programme is based on the Cooperation Treaty between the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the Government of Flanders that was signed in 1996.
