COOPERATION BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND PORTUGAL IS DISCUSSED DURING POLITICAL CONSULTATIONS OF FOREIGN MINISTRIES
During political consultations on 29 June in Lisbon, Political Director of Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Eitvydas Bajarūnas and Director-General for External Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal Nuno Brito discussed bilateral cooperation, important issues related to the EU, preparations for NATO’s Lisbon Summit, the groundwork laid for a new Strategic Concept for NATO and the Middle East Peace Process.
According to E.Bajarūnas, relations between Lithuania and Portugal have increasingly intensified in recent years. The Political Director suggested organizing a discussion on an intensified political and diplomatic dialogue and prospects of economic cooperation between the politicians and experts of the two countries.
During the consultations, the Political Director and Director-General for External Policy talked about Portugal’s cooperation in the Mediterranean region and sharing the experience of Latin America as Lithuania is getting ready for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2013.
The Political Director and Director-General for External Policy also discussed the proposal of the Presidency of the EU (which Spain held during this half-year) to lift visa requirements for citizens of Russia traveling to the Schengen area, evaluated progress in the implementation of the Treaty of Lisbon and talked about sanctions against Iran.
