COOPERATION BETWEEN LITHUANIA AND MOLDOVA IS DISCUSSED IN CHIŞINĂU

During a visit to Moldova on 12-13 October, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavičius and Moldovan officials discussed further Lithuania’s support to the country’s Euro-integration goals and its preparation for negotiations on the new EU-Moldova agreement, which would be concluded instead of the current Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.

On 12 October, E.Ignatavičius met with Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and European Integration Minister Iurie Leancă, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Natalia Gherman and Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Moldova’s reintegration Victor Osipov.

During the meetings, the bilateral cooperation projects in customs, veterinary, fitosanitation and other areas, as well as possibilities to implement joint projects in accordance with the EU Eastern Partnership programme were discussed.

Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs assured that the activities of the Centre of European Integration Studies that Lithuania established in Chişinău will be carried on. Lithuania’s Embassy in Chişinău, which is carrying out the functions of the NATO Contact Point Embassy in 2009-2010, will assist in spreading information about the Alliance to the Moldovan society and will coordinate the implementation of other projects.

Moldova’ Deputy Prime Minister was very positive about a joint letter that foreign ministers of Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Hungary sent to the European Commission last week. The letter regarding an urgent financial assistance to Moldova was initiated by Vilnius.

I.Leancă promised to take the invitation to come to Vilnius in the nearest future. A possibility for Lithuania’s Prime Minister and businessmen to pay a visit to Moldova was also discussed.

Participants of the meetings discussed the Transnistrian conflict and Lithuania’s potential as the Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2011 to contribute to the solution of the Transnistria
