In the European Convention session that took place in Brussels on 3-4 April, the participants discussed the articles of the future Constitutional Treaty that will define EU finances and regulate co-operation in the spheres of justice and home affairs. Representative of the Government at the Convention, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rytis Martikonis and members of the Seimas Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis, Algirdas Gricius, Eugenijus Maldeikis and Gintautas Šivickas represented Lithuania at the session.
While commenting on the issues concerning the future of the EU dealt in the session, Representative of the Lithuanian Government at the Convention Rytis Martikonis stressed that proposals to strengthen co-operation in the spheres of justice and home affairs corresponded to the attitude of Lithuania towards the future of the EU.
"Newly rising challenges to the security of citizens of the broadened Union may be met only by joining efforts”, the Representative of the Government says. According to Rytis Martikonis, Lithuania is interested in strengthening co-operation in the area of protection of the EU external border. “This has a major significance to Lithuania whose border will make one-fifth of the future EU exterior border. It is important that the principle of solidarity, including financial solidarity, should come into force in this area.”
