On 4 July in Brussels, the European Convention continues debates on Part 3 of the EU Draft Constitutional Treaty laying down detailed provisions on the European Union’s (EU) policies and specific actions in certain fields.
One of the issues in question is the reform of EU representation in third countries. According to Undersecretary of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and Government Representative at the Convention Rytis Martikonis, since the signature of the Accession Treaty, the Lithuanian Diplomacy has already been acting as part of the EU diplomacy. “Lithuanian ambassadors at the capitals of third countries - be it Washington or Minsk – take part in the meetings with the leaders of these countries together with ambassadors of other EU countries,” the Representative of Lithuanian Government said.
Rytis Martikonis expressed his belief that “the Lithuanian diplomacy faces new challenges representing interests of Lithuania as part of the EU in the world.”
