CONSULTATIONS ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LOCAL BORDER TRAFFIC REGIME WERE HELD IN VILNIUS
Consultations of Lithuanian and Russian Foreign Ministries and other competent institutions on the procedure for the mutual travels of border area residents were held on 23 November in Vilnius.
The draft agreement between the governments of Lithuania and Russia on the procedure for the mutual travels of border area residents was discussed during the consultations. This bilateral agreement should establish a regime specifically applicable to local border traffic, which will allow border area residents to cross the border with special local border traffic permits. The local border traffic permits would be issued to residents of border areas, who plan to cross the external land border because of well-grounded economic, commercial, cultural, social or other reasons.
It is expected that the signing of this agreement will facilitate contacts of border area residents, will intensify commercial, cultural and tourist exchanges, the cooperation between Lithuanian and Russian regions, and will promote the drawing closer of Kaliningrad Region to the European Union.
On 20 October, the Agreement between Lithuania and Belarus on the Procedure for the Mutual Travels of Border Area Residents was signed in Minsk.
