CONSULTATIONS OF THE LITHUANIAN AND RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRIES TOOK PLACE IN MOSCOW

On 10-11 March in Moscow, the delegation of Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Vice-Minister Evaldas Ignatavičius participated in the annual bilateral consultations of the Lithuanian and Russian Foreign Vice-Ministers and in the events dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of the re-establishment of Lithuania’s Independence.

During the meeting of the Lithuanian and Russian delegations (the latter was led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Titov) on 10 March, plans for visits and events in 2010, agreements that are being prepared, projects of Lithuania’s regional cooperation with the Kaliningrad Region of the Russian Federation, cooperation in the Council of the Baltic Sea States and in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, prospects of Russia’s relations with the European Union and NATO, and other important issues were discussed.

Vice-Minister E.Ignatavičius presented Lithuania’s initiatives regarding the chemicals and weapons dumped at the Baltic Sea.

A cooperation plan for 2010-2011 between the Lithuanian and Russian Ministries of Foreign Affairs was signed at the meeting. The plan includes visits and consultations on the above-mentioned bilateral, regional and European cooperation issues.

Žemaitis-Vytautas, MoscowDuring the visit in Moscow, Vice-Minister E.Ignatavičius paid tribute to the memory of the Lithuanian freedom-fighter, commander of the Lithuanian armed resistance Jonas Žemaitis-Vytautas by laying flowers at his burial place in the Donskoye cemetery.

On 11 March in Moscow, a meeting of representatives from Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Embassy in Russia, Consulates General in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad was held on key tasks of Lithuania’s relations with Russia and the needs of the Lithuanian community in the Russian Federation.

The Lithuanian delegation also attended the events dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of Lithuania’s Independence.
