CONSULTATIONS BETWEEN LITHUANIAN AND UKRAINIAN MINISTRIES OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON PERSPECTIVES OF UKRAINE’S INTEGRATION TO THE EU HELD IN VILNIUS
On 18 November in Vilnius, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Petras Vaitiekūnas met Ukraine’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Konstantin Eliseev.
In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs K.Eliseev also met Undersecretaries of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Žygimantas Pavilionis and Laimonas Talat-Kelpša.
The purpose of the meetings was to discuss the Ukraine’s and European Union’s negotiations on the Association agreement, Eastern Partnership Initiative, Ukraine's integration into NATO, the situation in the South Caucasus and regional cooperation issues.
During the consultations, guidelines for the strengthening of strategic partnership between Lithuania and Ukraine were also discussed. The Declaration, which establishes strategic partnership between Lithuania and Ukraine, was signed on 12 May 2008 in Vilnius by President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus and President of Ukraine Viktor Youshchenko.
Foreign Ministries of Lithuania and Ukraine signed the Bilateral consultations plan for 2008-2009 in the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry in order to continue to deepen the relations between the two countries in the following areas: European and Euro-Atlantic integration, policy planning, consular relations and economic cooperation in energy sector.
The bilateral consultations plan anticipates regular meetings of representatives of Foreign Ministries in Vilnius and Kiev.
