CONSULTATION ON SECURITY POLICY WITH REPRESENTATIVES FROM GERMANY’S FEDERAL FOREIGN OFFICE HELD IN VILNIUS

On 7 May in Vilnius, representatives from the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry and the German Federal Foreign Office discussed security policy issues. The Director of the Transatlantic Cooperation and Security Policy Department of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Gediminas Varvuolis presented highlights of the EU Common Security and Defence Policy of Lithuania’s EU Presidency, and Lithuania’s position in the run-up to the European Council in December 2013, which is set to feature a discussion on defence issues.

The EU-NATO cooperation, important issues on NATO’s agenda, future EU activities in Afghanistan, and the European Global Strategy initiative were discussed with Security Policy Director of Germany’s Federal Foreign Office Herbert Salber.

According to Salber, Germany supports goals of the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council, especially greater engagement of Eastern Partnership countries in EU crisis management operations.

The German partners were also assured that Lithuania supported their proposals for a more efficient implementation of EU civil missions. The meeting also underlined Germany’s important role in ensuring international security.
