Conference marking ten years of Lithuania’s development cooperation started the European Year for Development 2015

European Union Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Vytenis Andriukaitis stressed that in the face of new challenges there was a need to think how to use instruments for development cooperation more effectively to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. He was speaking during the conference “European Year for Development 2015, Lithuania’s development cooperation: experience of a decade” on 9 December in Vilnius.

“These challenges are global and interconnected and only joint efforts of all countries can tackle them,” said EU Commissioner during the conference that took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.

Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrius Krivas reviewed ten years development cooperation activities of Lithuania, presented future priorities, thanked partners in Lithuania and abroad. The Vice-Minister expressed hope that “the existing legal framework for development cooperation and humanitarian assistance will allow Lithuanian authorities and NGOs to operate much more efficiently”.

At the conference, Lithuania’s well-known public figures, journalists, musicians, representatives of non-governmental and youth organizations shared their experience of participation in social, cultural and other projects.

This conference is the first one of a series of events organised by Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the European Year for Development 2015.
