CONCERNING THE CONFLICT BETWEEN LITHUANIAN BASKETBALL FANS AND SPANISH OFFICERS IN SPAIN

During the evening on 10 September in Madrid, the capital of Spain, right before the Eurobasket 2007 match of Lithuania and France, a conflict occurred between the fans of Lithuanian team and Spanish police.

After the conflict one of Lithuanian fans, Tomas Balaišis, who goes by the nickname “Sėkla” (“Seed”), was detained and transferred to a Spanish prison. He was charged with the attempts to resist to the Spanish police officers. Lithuanian ambassador to Spain Mečys Laurinkus met with T.Balaišis the same evening.

Ambassador M.Laurinkus officially addressed the head of the Security Service of the Madrid Arena, where the match between Lithuania and France took place, asking to examine the possible act of desecration of the Lithuanian state flag. Currently, the response from the Spanish side regarding the results of the investigation is being waited for. Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Lithuanian Embassy to Spain will decide what action is appropriate after the response is received.
