COMUNITY OF DEMOCRACIES' STATEMENT ON TUNISIA

The member countries of the Community of Democracies (CoD) that took part in the Convening Group meeting on 18 January 2011, noted the recent developments in the Republic of Tunisia and encouraged all the involved parties in Tunisia to make steps toward dialogue and peaceful resolution of the present crisis in the country.

The CoD expresses regret over the loss of lives, as a consequence of the recent events, and conveys sympathy to the families of the victims.

The CoD, therefore, calls on the interested parties to seek unity for the good of the Tunisian people, in order to achieve peace, security and stability as soon as possible.

Lithuania took over the Presidency of the Community of Democracies in mid-2009 and will chair this organization until mid-2011. The Community, which is comprised of over 100 countries, aims to promote and strengthen democracy globally.
