COMMENT OF LITHUANIA‘S MFA REGARDING THE FINDINGS OF THE PARLIAMENTARY INVESTIGATION ON THE SUPPOSED EXISTENCE OF CIA PRISON IN LITHUANIA

The thorough and comprehensive parliamentary investigation has showed the democratic maturity and seriousness of the state. It has also showed that Lithuania seriously takes into account the allegations or accusations by the media regarding the supposed existence of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency‘s (CIA) detention centre in Lithuania and the supposed breaching of human rights.

The parliamentary investigation by the Seimas Committee on National Security and Defence has showed that it is necessary to define the decision-making on sensitive national security and intelligence matters.

As the parliamentary investigation has concluded, there are neither facts nor information that secret CIA detention centres existed in Lithuania. It has neither concluded that the territory of Lithuania was used to transfer persons under suspicion of terrorism nor that such persons had been brought in or transported from the territory of Lithuania.

The findings by the parliamentary committee affirmed the previous statement that the MFA of Lithuania had made according to the available information: the MFA has not had and does not possess any information which would confirm the supposed existence of the CIA detention centre in Lithuania.
