On 20 September, Lithuanian Ambassador to Israel Darius Degutis took part in the commemoration of the 69th anniversary of the liquidation of the Vilna Ghetto at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority.
The Ambassador read to the participants a letter from the Prime Minister of Lithuania Andrius Kubilius, honouring the Lithuanian Jews who were killed during the Holocaust. In his letter, the Prime Minister highlights the necessity to prevent the tragedy of the Holocaust from happening ever again and stresses the importance of the restoration of historical justice, education and cultivation of tolerance.
Over recent years, the Lithuanian-Israeli cooperation in the fields of science, innovation, technology, agriculture and industry has been intensifying. According to the Prime Minister, a partnership based on mutual interests brings Lithuania and Israel closer together.
The event was also attended by representatives from Yad Vashem, the Association of Jews from Vilna and its Surroundings “Beit Vilna”, and the Association of Lithuanian Jews in Israel, also by Holocaust survivors and their relatives.
