During his visit to Lithuania on November 23-26, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe Alvaro Gil-Robles stressed that Lithuania had made immense progress and had no substantial problems in the field of human rights protection.
In the Commissioner’s view, Lithuania’s needs further efforts in such areas as violence in families, human trafficking, improvement of police custody conditions, long pre-trial investigation, slow process of property restitution and the situation with the Roma community.
Commissioner Gil-Robles thanked for an excellent visit programme and for the open and willing cooperation of Lithuanian officials.
Based on the findings made during the visit, the Commissioner will draft a report on human rights situation in Lithuania to be presented to the Council of Ministers and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
