CLOSER TIES BETWEEN LITHUANIAN AND AFGHAN MINISTRIES WOULD BOOST REFORMS IN AFGHANISTAN, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS

According to Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis, closer ties between Lithuanian and Afghan ministries would give additional impetus to Afghanistan’s ongoing reforms.The minister said this on 11 November in Vilnius, during a meeting with Minister of Labour, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled of Afghanistan Amena Afzali.

Afghanistan’s Minister came to take part in the international development cooperation conference “Road to Successful Transition in Afghanistan, Province by Province”. The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry holds this conference on 12 November in Vilnius.

Minister A.Ažubalis thanked Minister A.Afzali for taking part in the conference. According to the Minister, the conference is important for Afghanistan’s development and for partnership between Lithuania and Afghanistan.

The Ministers discussed the construction of a child day care center which is a joint Lithuanian-Afghan project in Chaghcharan, the provincial capital of Afghanistan’s Ghor province. They also discussed other projects, which the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled of Afghanistan would like to implement together with Lithuania in Ghor province.

The Afghan Minister stressed that the knowledge about Lithuania’s social welfare and public disability benefit system, acquired during her visit to Lithuania, would be very useful when creating Afghanistan’s own social security system.

Minister A.Afzali also requested Lithuania for support in training and raising qualifications of the employees of the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled of Afghanistan.

The international conference “Road to Successful Transition in Afghanistan, Province by Province” focuses on development cooperation activities in Afghanistan and issues of support for reforms in this country during the transitional period.

The conference will be opened by Minister A.Ažubalis, European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs and Minister A.Afzali. It will be also attended by European Union’s Special Representative in Afghanistan Vygaudas Ušackas, diplomats and officials in charge of development cooperation policy from the U.S.A., EU member states, Lithuania’s partners in reconstructing Afghanistan’s Ghor province Japan, Georgia, Greece, other countries and international organizations.
