Budrys to attend informal meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers in Ireland
On 1-2 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kęstutis Budrys, will participate in an informal meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers (Gymnich).
In the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the ministers will discuss strengthening political, military, and financial support for Ukraine, as well as enhancing its energy resilience, to help the Ukrainian people withstand Russia’s malicious attempts to exploit the winter conditions and deprive Ukrainians of heat and electricity. Preparations for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly will also be discussed, including the steps needed to ensure freedom of navigation in the Black Sea and to prevent Russia from exporting grain stolen from occupied Ukrainian territories.
Foreign ministers from Iceland, the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway, Switzerland, and Ukraine will also participate in this session.
Ministers will also discuss ways to strengthen the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy in a changing geopolitical context, with a view to ensuring a coherent and effective EU role on the international stage.
In light of the challenges to international security, the ministers will also discuss the situation in the Middle East.
Informal meetings of EU foreign affairs ministers (Gymnich) are traditionally held every six months in the member state holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
