Budrys to attend an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Copenhagen
Kęstutis Budrys, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, will participate in an informal meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 29 and 30 August.
The discussions, which will also include the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland, and Ukraine, will focus on increasing political pressure on Russia, including possible secondary EU sanctions and measures to curb the aggressor's "shadow fleet" in the Baltic Sea. Ministers will also address the issue of the nationalizing frozen Russian assets and using them to support Ukraine.
Another key topic of this meeting will be the situation in the Middle East, the situation in the Gaza Strip, and Iran. The EU foreign affairs ministers will also discuss the EU decision-making process and ways to improve its effectiveness.
On the eve of the meeting, a working dinner will be held at the invitation of Denmark, with Belarusian democratic forces leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and her husband, former political prisoner Siarhei Tsikhanouski, in attendance. The dinner will focus on the situation in Belarus and the current state of the Belarusian democratic forces.
Informal meetings of EU foreign ministers, also known as “Gymnich” meetings —named after Gymnich Castle in Germany, where the first such meeting was held in 1974—take place every six months in the country presiding over the EU Council. Currently, Denmark holds the presidency for the second half of 2025.
