Budrys speaks by phone with Romania’s new Foreign Minister

On 21 October, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys spoke by phone with Romania’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sebastian Dănuț Neculăescu. During the call, the Ministers discussed bilateral cooperation, the security situation on NATO’s eastern flank, recent drone and missile incidents in the region, the situation in the Black Sea, support for Ukraine and the enlargement of the European Union (EU).

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister congratulated his Romanian counterpart on taking office the previous day

“Lithuania and Romania are bound not only by a close partnership, but also by a shared responsibility for Europe’s security. As countries on NATO’s eastern flank, we see, feel and face the threat posed by Russia every day. Russia’s recent actions aimed at testing NATO’s vigilance, unity and ability to respond only reinforce our conviction that a strong transatlantic bond, sustained support for Ukraine and a united Europe are the best response,” Budrys said.

The Lithuanian and Romanian Foreign Ministers also discussed incidents in the Black Sea in which several commercial vessels attacked by drones sank, leaving crew members dead or missing, as well as measures for a coordinated response.

Budrys also stressed that, when Lithuania assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union at the beginning of 2027, it will seek to ensure that the security needs of NATO’s eastern flank are adequately reflected in future EU financing decisions and in the Multiannual Financial Framework.
