Budrys: protection of Ukrainian children must remain the focus of the international community
On 22 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys, met with the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General's Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Vanessa Frazier. The meeting focused on the situation of Ukrainian children, the return of forcibly displaced and abducted children, and the strengthening of international efforts to protect them.
“The protection of Ukrainian children cannot depend on Russia’s readiness to cooperate. The international community must continue to document grave violations against children, seek accountability and make every effort to bring back to Ukraine children who were unlawfully and forcibly displaced," the Minister said.
During the meeting, Budrys stressed that it is important for Lithuania to maintain the consistent attention of the international community to the situation of Ukrainian children and Russia's accountability for serious violations against children. The Minister also expressed support for the maintenance of Russia on the list of countries listed in the annex to the UN Secretary-General's report on children and armed conflict and stressed the importance of the independence of the Offices of the UN Special Representatives on Children in Armed Conflict and Violence against Children.
