Budrys pays tribute to the Holocaust victims at the Kaunas Ninth Fort

On 27 January, on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kęstutis Budrys, paid tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust at the Kaunas Ninth Fort, where not only Lithuanian Jews, but also foreign Jews transported from Germany, Austria, France, Poland, and the then-Czechoslovakia were killed.

"The Holocaust was the worst crime and the deepest moral downfall that required not only a carefully crafted plan, but also observers and collaborators. They relied on a mix of fear, indifference, and pragmatism. Resisting this crime required courage. Let's remember the victims. Let's commit to take a principled stand against antisemitism, as well as all forms of hatred – for a safer, more united and prosperous society in Lithuania and the world," said Budrys.

Candles were lit at the memorial during the ceremony of paying tribute.

81 years ago, the largest of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau, was liberated. More than a million people were systematically murdered in this death factory alone. The vast majority of them were Jewish.
