Budrys: Nordic and Baltic countries must stand more united than ever
On 14 October in Vilnius, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys met with the ambassadors of the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) countries accredited to Lithuania. During the meeting, the Minister and the NB8 ambassadors discussed the security situation in Europe, Russia’s war against Ukraine, EU sanctions policy and transatlantic cooperation.
The Minister stressed the strategic importance of the NB8 format and the need to respond collectively to the security challenges facing the region, strengthen support for Ukraine and develop closer economic cooperation.
“Today, the NB8 countries must be more united than ever. Our shared objective is to strengthen support for Ukraine, maintain pressure on Russia, and enhance security and resilience in the Baltic Sea and Arctic regions. It is equally important to develop closer economic cooperation that strengthens the competitiveness and leadership of the region as a whole,” Budrys stressed.
The NB8 is an informal, non-institutionalised format for cooperation between five Nordic and three Baltic countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. The NB8 countries take turns coordinating the format’s activities each year, organising and hosting meetings held during their respective year of coordination. This year, Estonia coordinates NB8 cooperation, while Norway will take over the role in 2027.
