Budrys met with the Spanish Foreign Minister

On 24 February, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys, met with his Spanish counterpart José Manuel Albares at the margins of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council. The Foreign Ministers discussed support for Ukraine, the enhancement of European defence capabilities, the need to increase defence funding, and Spain’s participation in NATO’s Baltic Air Policing Mission.
At the meeting, Budrys stressed that European support for Ukraine is vital. According to the Foreign Minister, a just and lasting peace can only be achieved by strengthening Ukraine’s position. Therefore, it is necessary to increase and accelerate support. According to him, the security of Ukraine is the security of Europe, so there is no time for delays.
“Europe has a clear common goal: not only to end the war in Ukraine but also to stop Russia’s aggression once and for all. A sustainable and just peace can only be achieved by strengthening Ukraine and providing it with real security guarantees, the most credible of which is Ukraine’s NATO membership. We also need to speed up Ukraine’s EU accession process,” said Budrys.
The head of Lithuania’s diplomacy stressed that Europe must take decisive action to strengthen its security. According to Lithuania’s Foreign Minister, the time for discussions is over. It is high time we demonstrated a strong commitment to collective defence.
