At the meeting, Budrys emphasized the importance of striving not just for a ceasefire in Ukraine but for a lasting and sustainable peace. According to the Foreign Minister, it can only be achieved by strengthening Ukraine and weakening Russia.
“Temporary unsustainable solutions will not stop the Russian aggression but will enable the aggressor to strike again with new force. Ukraine must be given real security guarantees that can deter Russia. European military, financial and political support for Ukraine remains vital, as strengthening Ukraine is essential for peace,” said the Foreign Minister.
Budrys and the Finnish President discussed the need for Europe to secure a place for itself at the negotiating table so that the future of Europe, and the Baltic region in particular, is not decided behind our backs. The Foreign Minister stressed that Europe no longer had the luxury of lengthy discussions and reflections but must take decisive action to strengthen its own security without further delay.
“The future of European security depends on our actions today. More investment in defence is needed to protect ourselves, help Ukraine and deter Russia,” said the Foreign Minister.
