Budrys meets with the Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission: “We must continue to stand together against attempts by authoritarian regimes to undermine the values of freedom and democracy”

On 6 February in Washington, D.C., the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys, together with the Foreign Ministers of Latvia and Estonia, met with the Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, Congressman Joe Wilson.

The meeting focused on security challenges in the region, ensuring the accountability of Russia and authoritarian regimes supporting its aggression, including sanctions, support for Belarusian democratic forces, the situation in Georgia and support for Ukraine.

“We value our long-standing relationship with the U.S. in support of democratic values and principles and in opposition to the efforts by authoritarian regimes to undermine the values of freedom and sovereignty. Today, the mobilisation of Western partners to hold the leaders of the Russian and Belarusian regimes accountable, as well as in support of Georgian civil society and Belarusian democratic forces, is of utmost importance,” said the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy.

Wilson has chaired the Helsinki Commission since 2023. Before being elected to the United States Congress in 2001, he served in the South Carolina State Senate during Ronald Reagan’s Presidency.
