Budrys meets with Bundestag President: Strategic partnership between Lithuania and Germany contributes to security across Europe

On 9 April, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Lithuania’s head of diplomacy Kęstutis Budrys met with Julia Klöckner, President of the German Bundestag, who is visiting Lithuania on her first official visit. The meeting covered items on the bilateral agenda, cooperation within the EU and NATO, Lithuania’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU, support for Ukraine, as well as security and defense issues.

“Germany demonstrates exceptional leadership and fulfills NATO’s collective defense commitments through concrete actions. We are grateful to Germany for its strategic decision to deploy a heavy brigade in Lithuania on a permanent basis. We believe that the strategic partnership between Lithuania and Germany and our growing ties contribute to the security of all of Europe,” said Budrys.

The meeting focused heavily on bolstering the resilience of democratic societies and the importance of strategic communication in countering hostile external attempts to influence democratic processes. The need to increase international pressure on Russia through sanctions and to continue support for Ukraine was also discussed.

A key topic of the meeting was the reinforcement of bilateral relations.

“Cooperation between Lithuania and Germany—ranging from political dialogue and economic ties to cultural exchanges—is more intense today than ever before. The time has come to further open up Lithuanian culture to the people of Germany and, at the same time, to present German culture more widely in Lithuania. We hope that the Lithuanian cultural season in Germany, which will kick off this year, will enrich and invigorate ties between our countries and peoples,” said Budrys.

The Minister also highlighted the favorable environment for foreign investment in Lithuania and emphasized that our country remains a reliable and open economic partner for business cooperation, particularly in the defense industry, data centers, as well as the financial services and banking sectors.
