Budrys meets IAEA Director General Grossi in Warsaw
On 13 October, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys met with Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Warsaw. The meeting addressed the issue of the Astravets Nuclear Power Plant in Belarus and the nuclear safety situation in Ukraine.
“The problem of the Astravets Nuclear Power Plant remains. We have serious concerns about the safety culture at this and other nuclear power plants being built by Rosatom. The planned expansion of the nuclear power plant in Belarus will increase the threats to Lithuania. We expect the IAEA to engage in efforts to manage nuclear safety risks,” Budrys said.
The Minister noted that, as Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine, pressure on the Kremlin must be increased to bring an end to attacks on civilian energy infrastructure.
“Russia’s continued weaponisation of winter against Ukraine and its manipulation of nuclear safety in pursuit of military objectives are unacceptable,” the Minister said.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister stressed Lithuania’s support for the IAEA’s activities in Ukraine and expressed the expectation that IAEA missions in Ukraine will continue for as long as necessary.
