On 4 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys met with Mihai Popșoi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova. The meeting addressed bilateral relations between Lithuania and Moldova, Moldova’s progress toward EU integration, support for Ukraine, the regional security situation, and joint efforts to strengthen resilience against threats posed by Russia.

Lithuania’s head of diplomacy emphasized that Lithuania strongly supports Moldova’s membership in the EU. According to the Minister, the swift integration of Moldova and Ukraine into the EU, as well as progress in implementing European reforms and adopting the EU acquis, is a strategic priority for Europe.

“Membership in the European Union will serve as a guarantee of Moldova’s economic development, security, and regional stability. The enlargement of the EU is one of the most important priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU next year. We will strive to achieve as much progress as possible in the EU accession process for both Moldova and Ukraine, adhering to the merit-based principle of enlargement and ensuring that both countries can move forward together,” said Budrys.

The Minister expressed solidarity with Moldova regarding the recent violations of its airspace by Russian drones and emphasized the need to further strengthen the country’s resilience to cyber, information, and other hybrid threats. The meeting also addressed ways to reduce Russian influence in Transnistria and to strengthen Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

With regional elections approaching in Gagauzia, the Minister inquired about the situation in the region and the international community’s opportunities to contribute to ensuring transparent and democratic processes. According to Budrys, Lithuania remains ready to support the efforts of Moldovan institutions to protect democratic processes from external interference and disinformation.

At the meeting, Budrys also emphasized that consistent support for Ukraine, helping it defend itself and repel Russian aggression, remains a cornerstone of security and stability throughout Europe.

The Ministers discussed opportunities for expanding economic cooperation, strengthening energy security, and digital transformation. Budrys invited Moldova to join Lithuania’s initiative in Brussels to commemorate the victims of totalitarian regimes by constructing a pan-European memorial.
