Budrys in North Macedonia: EU enlargement is a strategic investment in a stronger and more united Europe
On 29 June, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys is on a working visit to North Macedonia. On Monday, Budrys met with Timčo Mucunski, North Macedonia's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
During the meeting, the Ministers discussed intensifying bilateral relations, the EU enlargement process, the regional security situation, support for Ukraine, NATO unity and the fight against Russia's disinformation.
Budrys stressed that, despite the geographical distance, Lithuania and North Macedonia share similar historical experiences: the two countries restored their independence at the end of the 20th century, built democratic institutions and chose the path of Euro-Atlantic integration. Lithuania has consistently supported North Macedonia's European integration.
“Lithuania recognised North Macedonia more than three decades ago and has consistently supported its European future throughout this time. Today, with the opening of North Macedonia's embassy in Vilnius, we are transitioning to a new phase of our partnership," said Budrys.
Much attention was paid to the EU's enlargement policy. According to Budrys, EU enlargement is an important geopolitical tool that strengthens Europe's security, stability and prosperity.
"Enlargement is a strategic investment in a stronger and more united Europe. North Macedonia is part of the European Union – the question is not whether, but when. Lithuania will continue to support your reform process and is ready to share its experience", stressed the head of Lithuania's diplomacy.
When discussing the security situation, Budrys drew attention to Russia's aggression against Ukraine. According to Budrys, Russia has not abandoned its imperialist ambitions and continues the war in the hope that the West will tire out.
“Our task is to prove that this strategy will not work. The stronger Ukraine is on the battlefield, the stronger its position at the negotiating table. That is why we need to ensure not only political but also sustainable financial support for Ukraine’s defence,” said Budrys.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of NATO and transatlantic unity. The Minister emphasized that a strong partnership between Europe and North America is the indispensable bedrock that supports the strength of the Alliance.
The Ministers also discussed the threats posed by disinformation by authoritarian regimes in the Western Balkans. Budrys stressed the need to actively counteract anti-Western narratives and strengthen the resilience of democratic institutions. Lithuania is ready to share its experience in this area as well.
