Budrys in Klaipėda: every returning professional is an important example of a stronger Lithuania

On 8 October, at Klaipėda University Hospital, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys met with doctors and other healthcare professionals who have returned to live and work in Lithuania from abroad.

During the meeting, the healthcare professionals shared their return stories, spoke about their professional experience in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and other European countries, and discussed the main challenges faced by returning specialists and their families.

“Today, Lithuania is competing for talent across Europe. We must therefore not only encourage our healthcare professionals to return, but also create an environment in which they see professional opportunities, can put their ideas into practice and feel valued. Klaipėda’s example shows that a consistent and targeted approach delivers results: highly qualified specialists are returning to the region, strengthening our healthcare system and raising standards of medical care,” said Kęstutis Budrys.

Over the past few years, more than ten Lithuanian healthcare professionals who had worked abroad have joined the team at Klaipėda University Hospital. According to them, the decision to return was driven not only by the desire to be closer to their families and homeland, but also by the opportunity to contribute to the development of a modern university hospital, introduce advanced treatment methods and engage in academic activities.

“Every returning professional is an important example of Lithuania’s growth. We must listen to their experiences, remove unnecessary obstacles and ensure that returning to Lithuania is as smooth as possible. This is an investment in the country’s future,” Kęstutis Budrys emphasised.

The number of Lithuanian citizens returning to Klaipėda is increasing. According to data from the State Data Agency, 1,056 people returned to Klaipėda City Municipality in 2025.

Since 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ consultation centre Grįžtu LT (www.griztu.lt) has been operating as a one-stop-shop providing information to members of the Lithuanian diaspora who have returned, are planning to move to Lithuania, or are considering returning.
