Budrys: EU enlargement – Europe's most important geopolitical instrument
On 9 December, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys met with the European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, who is visiting Lithuania. During the meeting, the Minister and the European Commissioner discussed the European Union's enlargement policy, with particular attention given to the prospects of Ukraine's and Moldova's EU membership.
At the meeting, the Minister emphasized that the EU's enlargement is Europe's most important geopolitical instrument for ensuring peace and security on our continent. Budrys stressed that Ukraine and Moldova are at the forefront of the enlargement process today, and their progress towards EU membership must be clearly embedded in the community's decisions.
“Ukraine’s membership of the EU is a prerequisite for European security. It is also an element of security guarantees for Ukraine,” said the Minister.
The head of Lithuania's diplomacy emphasized the need for the EU to send clear, consistent signals on Ukraine's integration into the EU, which would allow Ukrainians to see the prospect of membership more clearly and encourage them to continue implementing the necessary reforms even more effectively. Budrys welcomed Moldova's progress in implementing the Commission's recommendations and reforms.
The Minister underlined that the EU enlargement would be among the key priorities of Lithuania's Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2027.
