Budrys discusses strengthening research on antisemitism and the Holocaust with Klaipėda University scholars
On 9 October, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys met with researchers at the Institute of Baltic Region History and Archaeology of Klaipėda University to discuss the importance of research on antisemitism, Holocaust remembrance and Jewish studies.
The meeting focused on the role of academic research in strengthening historical memory, combating antisemitism and fostering society’s resilience to the distortion of history.
“Antisemitism has no place in a democratic society. It is therefore particularly important not only to preserve the memory of the Holocaust, but also to draw on academic research that helps us better understand the past, recognise manifestations of hatred and prevent them from recurring in the future,” said Kęstutis Budrys.
According to the Minister, the academic community plays an important role in promoting historical awareness and strengthening democratic values.
“The work of researchers helps society to assess history critically. Lithuania values the contribution of scholars to research on the Holocaust, Jewish studies and antisemitism, as well as the international dissemination of this research,” the Minister emphasised.
The Institute of Baltic Region History and Archaeology at Klaipėda University brings together researchers studying the development of societies and cultures in the Baltic Sea region from prehistory to the present day. The Institute also provides programmes in history and archaeology and conducts research in the fields of memory culture, historical imagination, Jewish studies and antisemitism.
