Budrys discusses prospects for cooperation with Hitachi in economic security, advanced nuclear technologies and critical infrastructure

On 19 October, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys met with representatives of the Japanese technology company Hitachi to discuss opportunities for cooperation between Lithuania and Japan in the areas of economic security, energy, transport and advanced technologies.

The Minister stressed that Lithuania and Japan share a similar approach to economic security and to strengthening resilience amid a changing geopolitical environment.

“Lithuania and Japan share the understanding that economic security is now an integral part of national security. Reliable supply chains, the protection of critical infrastructure, investment in advanced technologies and partnerships with like-minded countries have become essential to ensuring our resilience and competitiveness,” said Minister Budrys.

The meeting focused in particular on energy security and the prospects for advanced nuclear energy technologies. According to Minister Budrys, Lithuania seeks to strengthen international cooperation in developing nuclear energy expertise, training specialists and conducting research. The development of strategic transport and energy infrastructure projects in the region was also discussed.

The meeting also addressed projects related to the decommissioning of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. According to the Minister, international expertise and the application of innovative technologies are particularly important in this field, especially in robotics, remote dismantling, radiation safety and radioactive waste management.

Hitachi is one of Japan’s largest technology companies, operating in the fields of energy, transport, digital technologies, industrial automation, telecommunications and other sectors.
